Native extensions: workflow
From installed SDK to loading and reference docs.
A native extension is a separate library inside the engine process. Its bugs can terminate the editor or game, so use a separate test project. Consider C# first for ordinary gameplay logic.
Installed ExtensionSDK provides a C ABI and DLL example. It does not ship a high-level C++ class library.
| Task | Guide |
|---|---|
| Understand SDK contents | C++ and ExtensionSDK. |
| Build and load a DLL | Complete example. |
| Choose a build tool | Build paths. |
| Use CMake/Ninja | CMake. |
| Use SCons | SCons. |
| Preserve value lifetimes | ABI and types. |
| Obtain class reference data | XML documentation. |
Windows x64, three builds, class registration/unloading, and XML export were checked. Other platforms, concrete native-instance objects, and hot reload were not.
