Android editor: projects, files and limitations
Current requirements, C# limitation, permissions, Play windows and project transfer.
The Android editor is a native editor port for working on projects on a device. It is a separate build: neither the Windows editor nor an Android game replaces it. This guide describes requirements and workflow from current Reckfell 1.0.0 source; an available released APK and actual device operation require separate verification. Unverified store listings are not linked.
Check compatibility before transferring a project
| Check | Current source evidence |
|---|---|
| Android | Shared minSdk=24, meaning Android 7.0 or newer. A particular APK can require a higher minimum |
| Graphics | Main manifest requires OpenGL ES 3.0 and declares Vulkan optional. API availability establishes neither driver stability nor performance |
| C# | C# module editor builds are allowed only on Windows, Linux and macOS; Android editor does not provide this workflow |
| Native plugins | Require Android libraries for the installed editor ABI; Windows DLLs do not work |
| XR | Needs an appropriate build variant and runtime; see XR editor |
C# in an exported Android game is a separate desktop-editor capability. It does not mean the Android editor can build/run a C# project. Continue C# project development in the desktop editor.
Android checks minSdk during installation; Android Developers explains that field. Source requirements are not evidence of testing every phone, tablet or Chromebook.
First project on a device
- Use the actual Android editor for the intended version/ABI. If no matching APK is published, Windows Runtime 1.0.0 does not establish mobile-editor availability.
- Choose a readable/writable local project directory. Opening one file through a cloud provider does not guarantee access to its parent directory.
- Create a small project without C# or platform plugins, or transfer a copy of one. Compatibility can be a starting point for the first non-XR test; evaluate demanding graphics separately on the target GPU.
- Save a simple
.rscenelevel, assign it as the main level and run Play. Check rendering, input and stopping the game. Opening the editor alone does not prove project execution. - Change/save a resource, close the editor fully and reopen the project. The change must remain. Then verify a project copy on another device/computer if you plan to transfer it.
These are acceptance steps for your device, not a report of completed mobile testing. Verify saving, imports and running a small copy before transferring an entire large project.
Files and permissions
The editor manifest requests MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and legacy READ/WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE limited through API 29. Denial can restrict directory access. Choose an accessible local folder; do not assume every content:// URI can become a filesystem path. The current open handler attempts path reconstruction because a project needs its entire directory.
All-files access does not grant access to other apps' private directories, including their Android/data; this is an Android restriction. It does not make cloud storage a local disk.
| Action | Permission and request timing |
|---|---|
| Working in a shared project folder | File/shared-storage access; verify by saving and reopening |
| Audio input | RECORD_AUDIO when audio/driver/enable_input is enabled |
| Camera | CAMERA when CameraFeed.feed_is_active becomes active |
| Opening an APK for installation | REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES on this action, if the app variant contains the permission |
| XR capabilities | Separate runtime permissions with xr/openxr/enabled, depending on variant/device |
Editor permissions do not replace standalone-game permissions. Microphone denial does not explain failure to save an ordinary resource: inspect directory access and the actual error.
Input and game windows
The editor provides these touch settings:
interface/touchscreen/enable_touch_optimizationsadapts controls for touch.interface/touchscreen/enable_long_press_as_right_clickenables long-press context actions; changing it requires an editor restart.interface/touchscreen/scale_gizmo_handlescontrols gizmo-handle size and also requires restart.interface/touchscreen/touch_actions_panel: Disabled=0, Embedded Panel=1, Floating Panel=2.
Keyboard/mouse input exposes ordinary editor actions; verify layout and system-reserved shortcuts on your device. A virtual keyboard or external-editor setting does not establish support for arbitrary desktop IDEs.
Current placement controls are run/window_placement/android_window (Auto=0, Same as Editor=1, Side-by-side with Editor=2) and run/window_placement/game_embed_mode (Disabled=-1, Auto=0, Enabled=1 in ordinary Android editor). Actual placement depends on screen and multi-window mode. Older instructions mention play_window_pip_mode; current EditorSettings does not define it, so do not treat it as a required step.
Transfer projects
Transfer the directory containing project.reckfell, .rscene levels, .rprefab prefabs, source assets, scripts and accompanying .uid/import settings. Save changes and stop the editor on the source device first. Use one active copy: simultaneous two-way synchronization of open projects can overwrite edits.
The .reckfell cache is not source project content. Resources are reimported after transfer; wait for completion and inspect missing files/plugins. A mobile Git client is a separate application whose folder access is configured independently. No particular Git client is required by this guide.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Next action |
|---|---|
| Installation fails | Check the APK minSdk/ABI and free space; a Windows EXE is no Android package |
| File visible but project cannot open | Transfer the full directory locally; verify project.reckfell and access to adjacent assets |
| Saving fails | Check directory write access and free space; reopen after saving |
| C# scripts do not build | Use a desktop C# editor; Android export does not add Android C# editor tools |
| Native plugin fails to load | Check Android ABI, dependencies and editor API compatibility |
| Slow or black output | Test a simple project/compatible renderer first, then change one graphics setting at a time and retain Output messages |
| No embedded Play window | Check game_embed_mode and device type; embedding is disabled in XR |
Verification limits
Requirements, manifest permissions, window/touch settings and the C# editor-build gate were reviewed against current source. C# platform-selection Python functions were executed separately: Android/iOS/Web editor targets rejected, desktop targets allowed; this is not an APK build. No verified Android-editor run is available on this machine: installation, system dialogs, input, saving, Play, performance and device plugins remain untested. Engine source, installed Runtime and SDK unchanged.
