Customizing the editor interface
Docks, floating windows, layouts and current scale and theme setting paths.
Interface settings change the editor workspace, not your game’s rendered image. Choose a readable scale, restore needed panels and save a layout. Configure game-window resolution and behavior separately in Project Settings.
Restore or move a panel
- Open Editor → Editor Docks and select the panel, such as Hierarchy, Inspector or Content Browser.
- Resize areas by dragging the separator between them.
- Move a panel through its menu and available docking positions. Check which panel you are moving: the main editing workspace also participates in the dock system.
- Ensure the editing area and error messages remain usable after rearranging panels.
Do not change game scaling to enlarge editor buttons. Use the editor UI scale setting below.
Separate windows
Make Floating moves a supported panel to a separate window. Multiple windows require platform support and an enabled editor window mode. Check these current settings:
interface/editor/display/single_window_mode— single-window mode;interface/multi_window/enable— permission to use separate windows.
For a setting requiring restart, restart when prompted after saving your work. Window behavior also depends on the OS window manager.
Closing a floating window returns a panel with a stored main-window position to that position; a panel without one may close. Reopen it through Editor → Editor Docks if necessary. Closing the window does not delete project files.
interface/multi_window/restore_windows_on_load controls restoring separate windows at startup. If a panel disappears after a monitor change, first restore it through the dock menu or load the standard layout. Do not delete the project directory to restore the interface.
Save and restore layouts
Open Editor → Editor Layouts → Save Layout… and choose a clear name such as Level editing. Apply a saved layout through Editor Layouts. Layouts preserve dock placement and window parameters; individual panels can save additional state.
Default loads the standard layout. The name Default is special: saving your layout under it overrides the standard preset. Use another name for ordinary presets.
Delete Layout… removes the selected saved preset. Removing a custom Default restores the built-in standard layout. This does not remove levels or resources, but save a useful layout under another name before deleting it.
Presets are stored in editor_layouts.cfg in the editor configuration directory. Open it through Editor → Open Editor Settings Folder, or Open Editor Data/Settings Folder when data and configuration share a directory, rather than assuming one absolute path across operating systems and installation modes.
Scale, language and readability
Open Editor → Editor Settings…. If translated labels are difficult to match to instructions, search for the setting’s original key. The current version uses these keys:
| Task | Key |
|---|---|
| Editor language | interface/editor/localization/editor_language |
| UI scale | interface/editor/appearance/display_scale |
| Custom scale | interface/editor/appearance/custom_display_scale |
| Color theme | interface/theme/color_preset |
| Spacing density | interface/theme/spacing_preset |
| Number row as numpad in 3D | editors/3d/navigation/emulate_numpad |
| Three-button mouse emulation in 3D | editors/3d/navigation/emulate_3_button_mouse |
Choose a scale that keeps labels readable and leaves room for the main panels. For custom scaling, select the corresponding Display Scale mode. Theme and spacing do not enable postprocessing or change project materials. Do not copy old setting paths from another version: language, scale and window-mode settings moved into subgroups.
Editor settings belong to its configuration and may affect other projects using the same profile. Project Settings and the current level’s settings are separate data.
Main dock presence and setting values were checked in the installed editor. Layout persistence and window rules were reviewed against source; actual window movement, DPI/theme changes and other operating systems were not tested.
